Protect Our Rivers From Suction Dredge Mining Once and For All
Tell your local representatives that you support permanent protections for Oregon's rivers and streams from suction dredge mining.
Rogue Riverkeeper and many others have been working to reform suction dredge mining and protect Oregon's rivers and streams for years. Oregon legislature has introduced a new bill that could safeguard salmon streams from harmful mining impacts across the state permanently!
Salmon are currently enjoying a very temporary reprieve from the impacts of suction dredge gold mining in our rivers and streams, but it won’t last for long! Thanks to the efforts of advocates like you, Oregon enacted a 5-year moratorium (starting 1/2/2016) on mining with suction dredges and heavy equipment in our salmon streams.
Mining for gold directly in our streams is done by sucking up the bottom or the stream with gasoline-powered equipment called a suction dredge and sifting through the material for gold. This harms water clarity, suspends toxics like mercury in the water column, and damages spawning habitat for salmon. This form of mining relies on the use of public resources that belong to us all by appropriating them for private profit.
We have an opportunity to implement permanent regulatory reforms that will extend beyond the current 5-year moratorium to protect Oregon's waterways from suction dredge mining.
