Based in southern Oregon, Rogue Riverkeeper fills a unique role in the Rogue River basin as a watchdog, steward and voice for the river and its watershed. As Rogue Riverkeeper works to protect clean water and fish populations in the Rogue River basin, we are currently looking to hire a motivated conservation advocate to join our staff in Ashland, Oregon.

Job Purpose: The Rogue Riverkeeper Conservation Director will direct implementation of Rogue Riverkeeper’s conservation program and achieve its goals to protect, maintain, and restore water quality, scenic beauty, recreation, and native fish for future generations.

Duties and Objectives:

  • Work with the Rogue Riverkeeper, KS Wild Executive Director and Rogue Riverkeeper Advisory Team to identify emerging and ongoing threats to the watershed. 
  • Pursue advocacy strategies to address pressing issues including proactive campaigns, administrative avenues, litigation, legislative remedies, combined with grassroots public organizing as appropriate.
  • Watchdog and ensure the application and enforcement of the Clean Water Act, and other laws to protect water quality, water quantity and native fish, in the Rogue Basin and adjacent coastal watersheds. This includes reviewing and commenting on local, state and federal applications/permits, monitoring, researching and responding to violations and promoting Clean Water Act implementation.
  • Work with allies, including other members of the Waterkeeper Alliance, conservation allies, fishing groups and supporters in the community to advance Rogue Riverkeeper’s mission. 
  • Coordinate and manage litigation for Rogue Riverkeeper.
  • Collaborate with other Rogue Riverkeeper staff on tasks as needed (events, fundraising, volunteer management, strategic planning, field studies, etc).


Rogue Riverkeeper seeks an experienced individual with a deep understanding of the Clean Water Act and basics of other state and federal environmental statutes. An advanced degree in law or science preferred, but equivalent experience working in non-profit, aquatic science, aquatic restoration or environmental law and/or advocacy sectors would be considered. A strong candidate should have a willingness to be engaged in controversial issues and to collaborate with diverse stakeholders.


Additional considerations: 

  • Passion for protecting clean water and the species that depend on Rogue basin waterways.
  • Positive, friendly and work well in a team environment. 
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Proficiency in basic computer software such as Word and Excel. 
  • Experience working on legislative campaigns, managing litigation, and coalition-building is desirable. 
  • Experience with GIS and CRM platforms a plus.


Pay and Location

Position is full-time. Competitive salary, commensurate with experience. Rogue Riverkeeper offers attractive benefits including health insurance plan and paid time off for holidays, vacation, and sick leave. 

The Rogue Riverkeeper Conservation Director reports to the Rogue Riverkeeper and is part of a team that also includes a water quality monitoring and volunteer coordinator. Most work is performed from our office in Ashland, OR, but the position will also require some traveling, evening, and weekend work (when appropriate).
